Hot Mix Asphalt

Hot Mix Asphalt is used for Road Repairs and Complete Road Replacements

The use of hot mix asphalt is a favourite for surfacing roads in Australia, due to its excellent properties and long life. Also known as bitumen, hot mix asphalt can be laid and then pressed using a roller to provide a completely sealed surface that is impervious to water and provides a great surface for roads and pavements.

One of the best reasons for using hot mix asphalt is that roads and pavements can be quickly repaired. Sometimes potholes and cracks can appear especially after long hot or cold spells, and that sometimes causes the road surface to crack and then break up. On roads with heavy traffic, a small hole can quickly expand to become a great deal bigger that will possibly cause damage to a vehicle or cause cars to swerve to avoid them.

As a temporary fix, hot mix asphalt can be injected into a pothole and then pressed. This fills the hole completely, but usually won’t be permanent. For a more permanent fix, a larger area is usually cut out of the road and then filled with asphalt. The new patch is usually keyed into the existing road in order to provide a strong repair. A more permanent solution still is to replace complete sections of road. This can be done quickly with hot mix asphalt, but will result in the entire road closed while work is carried out. Generally one team can remove the existing road surface, while another will lay new asphalt behind it, creating a rolling road construction.
